The Social Hub Maastricht

The shared spaces came in handy during our three-night stay, especially with snow outside and my partner feeling unwell for a day. There was room to hang out indoors. Our room was spacious, the bed was firm but comfortable, the ground floor had plenty of seating plus table tennis, pool and table football for €1 each, and the gym was well equipped. Breakfast offered lots of choice. Staff were consistently warm and helpful, from finding us a gym towel and heating my girlfriend’s lunch to letting us start breakfast a few minutes early for our train. There were some frustrations too. The breakfast loaf was a little stale each day, I couldn’t get the gym bikes working even after setting up a Technogym account, and the gym had no towels or water. Its concrete floor meant the free weights rolled away and couldn’t be dropped after lifting. I paid extra for kitchenette room 617, but it had no cutlery, dishes or pans. Check-in was hectic, with several guests’ rooms not ready around 3. We tried at 2:50 and ours was ready by 3:10.

I enjoyed catching some sun at the rooftop bar. The rooms were comfortable, and I liked the setup with coffee, coworking and event spaces. The staff were friendly and made it feel like home.

The rooftop restaurant was a complete disaster, which was a shame because the place itself was beautiful. Breakfast was disappointing too, especially for the price. We arrived around 9:50 AM to find a cold buffet: wilted salads, pancakes that were burnt and cold, and some empty containers. The cold cuts tasted fine, though they looked as if they’d been out since early morning. What shocked me most was seeing all the employees rush to pack the remaining food into cardboard containers before service had even ended. By 10:29 AM, the buffet was gone and the coffee machines were already being cleaned. I’ve worked in hospitality for over 10 years and had never seen that at a hotel of this level. The breakfast staff also seemed noticeably inattentive and unconcerned. Reception staff, on the other hand, were kind and welcoming.

I usually avoid hotels if I can, but I’d recommend this one to anyone spending a night or two in Maastricht. The old factory has been renovated with taste, the rooms were quiet, and there are nice amenities on site. Renting a bike was easy, and the whole experience felt well designed for a great price.
