Fletcher Hotel De Nieuwe Doelen - Middelburg

We originally booked two nights in a balcony room for the canal view, but ended up staying four, using the hotel as a base for trips around Zeeland. There is a road between the hotel and the quai, though it was quiet after 11pm. The room was a good size. The mattress was comfortable, if a little high for me at 156cm; my husband liked it. Breakfast had hams and salamis, yogurt, cereal, bread, croissants, fruit, and hard-boiled and scrambled eggs. It got a bit repetitive over four days. On Saturday there was fruit salad, and I wish that had been offered daily, perhaps with fresh orange juice too. The staff were all brilliant and very helpful: Suzanne, Selina, Arend, Maarten, Godelivia. I hope I got the spellings right. There was even a parrot in the bar. Parking nearby costs €15 for 24 hours or €3 an hour. We were lucky enough to find a spot close by each day. It took less than ten minutes to walk into the centre, with lovely views on the way. We liked the town and would stay here again if we visit other parts of the Netherlands in that direction.

This feels like a budget motel charging hotel prices, and badly needs renovation. The staff were friendly, but the floors and walls are so thin and creaky that you hear people all around and above you. The stairwell smelled and had boxes in it, the sink drained poorly, and I couldn't control the room temperature.

The rooms were comfortable and spotless, and the staff made us feel welcome. There's also a lovely garden at the back where you can sit outside. The hotel overlooks the canal and is conveniently close to both the station and town centre. I'd definitely stay again.

We turned up in middlesberg without a hotel booked, so we were glad to find this place. The room was roomy enough, and the bed was really comfortable. The bathroom was tastefully done, with a lovely big shower. After a night in town, we finished up at the hotel bar, which had a huge drinks menu at very reasonable prices. Breakfast had lots of continental choices, and the staff were friendly and helpful. A great hotel, with a fantastic garden.
