B & B de Smedery

The hosts were so friendly and helpful, and the location is ideal, right by the river and next to downtown. I was given a beautiful two-level apartment with a lovely balcony for the same price as the room I’d booked. You can also use a bike for free. I really enjoyed my stay at B&B De Smedery and hope to come back.

Staying in this brilliantly redesigned foundry on the shore of the Waal River made me feel like I was living in the Netherlands, rather than being treated as a tourist. The lovely historic town of Nijmegen, Romans and Barbarossa included, is only a ten-minute walk one way. Head the other way and you can bike along the dike through green countryside.

The apartment was very clean and tidy, and the hosts were kind and always happy to help. Breakfast was provided for the week, and there was free bike hire and Wi-Fi. It’s a short walk into town. I’d highly recommend this B&B for a visit to such a beautiful, historic part of the world.

The large table was great for long breakfasts, the shower was good, and our beds were very comfortable. The house was clean and generally well equipped, and we could ask the welcoming hosts for extra things whenever needed. We stayed five people in Waalzicht, one of several rooms, and the building’s terrace is shared. The kitchen was too small for proper cooking for five, with only two electric burners and hardly any room for food prep or dishes. The microwave and oven combined worked well, though it was small for five. The fridge had a broken freezer door, but the landlord said it would be fixed soon. The house’s eco wine is highly recommended. B&B De Smedery is in a quiet part of Nijmegen, with lovely river views and nice walks and bike rides nearby. Bike storage behind the house felt safe, and it’s about a ten-minute walk to the city centre.
