Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin

The restaurant visit summed up our stay: we waited 15 minutes before asking for menus, then 20 more for the starter and another 30 for the main course. There were only about 15 guests, and the restaurant was roughly half full. We paid €1,000 a night for a suite and stayed three nights, though this review refers to our entire four-day stay. In a suite meant for three, there were only two cups, two glasses, and two balcony chairs. Used breakfast coffee cups and empty glasses sat in the room the whole time. Housekeeping made the beds and gave the bathroom a quick wipe, but the room never felt properly clean. Dust was everywhere, including on the sofas and tables in the hallways by the elevators. The suite's furnishings looked worn and outdated, and badly needed renovation. The hotel is well located and has convenient parking, including an underground garage. Those were the only positives for us. We barely saw staff, apart from an occasional doorman who could help with luggage. For a hotel presenting itself as five-star, the service and attention were far below what we'd expect. All show, no substance. The cleanliness, furnishings, service, and attention to detail felt more like a three-star property. It was absolutely not worth €1,000 per night.

The young waitresses and waiters seemed motivated, but the restaurants Breakers and La Terrace needed much better guidance. There was no Maître d’ to lead the teams, and the service left a lot of room for improvement. Very disappointing.

The staff were genuinely welcoming and kind, and the interior has an elegant feel. Outside, the views are breathtaking. The hotel is right across from the sea, so the setting is hard to beat. Parking is convenient, either on the street at a reasonable price or at the hotel for €17.50 per day. One of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever seen.
