The best part for me was the outdoor sauna and jacuzzi. They were clean, well maintained and not too busy. The pool was big enough for a good morning swim, though the strong smell of oxide made me hesitate before getting in, and the room felt dark and uninviting. There was no spa service available during our visit, but the common area was nice for coffee, reading by the chimney and getting water before the sauna. The bathroom let the room down. There was mold and debris in the shower, including old snot, and the shared toilet brush looked unhygienic, sitting in a layer of white substance. I asked staff to clean the shower and they did so the next day. The standard bedroom is plain, but has what you need for a budget trip when you won't spend much time there, and the sheets felt fresh and clean. Expect a tourist fee of about €5 per day, payable at reception on arrival. We hadn't known about it and were surprised. Bring earplugs if you're sensitive to noise. The warming machine buzzed all night throughout the building, and sound came through the walls, so privacy was limited unless you stayed quiet or turned on the old TV. Breakfast had enough variety to start the day, with fresh bread, fruit, granola, eggs and spreads. The coffee was okay, the orange juice wasn't fresh, and the other fruit juices were really nice. I ordered pasta alfredo with shrimps for dinner. It was €24 for a small portion with literally four shrimps, and tasted okay but nothing special. They also have soups, fish, other main dishes and sides. The restaurant space itself is spacious and very nice. Service was okay, kind when asked, but not especially engaging. After four days, I think the stay comes down to expectations and accepting the objective facts. If you're used to budget travel and mainly need the basics, you can have a great time. For something more luxurious, keep an open mind and try to see the good in it. From what I researched, the hotel has new management, and they're trying to change the building and service. It's worth giving them a try.

The restaurant downstairs was nearly empty, but the food was good and the staff friendly. The bed was fresh too, probably the only thing that had actually been changed and cleaned. The rest of the stay was awful. We came for a few days to relax because it was called a “spa hotel,” but it had nothing to do with spa or relaxation. We left a day early because we couldn't stay in that dirt. The toilet was dirty when we entered the room, and there was a hair on the towel. I could understand that as a one-off, but then we found hair in the shower drain, dirty shower doors and taps, and black mold on the shower walls. The coffee machine was dirty and had used capsules from previous guests, and the kettle was dirty as well. Even the bedside table had a mug stain. The spa was so dirty we didn't risk going in. The sound insulation was terrible, and we could hear every noise from outside, so we didn't rest well. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

They tried to charge me another €10 for a “taxe” I'd already paid in advance. I had to argue and show proof, which was stressful and frustrating. The room was hot and uncomfortable, without proper ventilation or air conditioning, and it hadn't been cleaned properly. The staff seemed unhelpful and unprofessional. It was a very disappointing stay, and I wouldn't return or recommend the hotel.

For my first trip to Ommen, I was impressed by how committed the owner is to running a good hotel. The staff were great, and the owner clearly cares about the property and guests. The hotel is easy to find beside the train station, handy for travelling from out of town. It has historic character alongside renovations that bring out the best of the building. My room was clean, comfortable and welcoming, with plenty of space, a sitting area, balcony and full bathroom. It’s a great value place for a couples holiday or for a solo stay like mine on a trip abroad. I really enjoyed it and look forward to coming back.

The shower had a lot of mold, and my only real plus was how close the hotel is to the train station. The room price felt too high. I booked through Booking, where it said taxes and fees were included, but at checkout the administrator asked me for €90. When I asked what it was for, they said tax and breakfast, even though I hadn't eaten breakfast at the restaurant. After I pointed that out, the amount due dropped to €20. I was given only a copy of the payment receipt, with no explanation or receipts showing what exactly I'd paid.
