De Zilte Melis

The room was tiny, and the ceilings felt very low. On arrival, there was a toilet smell in the building, plus a neighbor's shoes covered in cheese had been left in the hallway. We also had to take out the rubbish and dismantle the beds ourselves, despite paying €50 for cleaning, which felt a bit stingy. The place was clean, had secure parking, and a lovely terrace. There are a few shops nearby and free bikes. Overall, it was still a nice place, and the key box meant no staff were needed.

Tiny, but cozy, and it had everything we needed for a long weekend.

The bikes weren’t much use to us. We rode them to Westkapelle and back, then left them alone for the rest of the stay, so I’d bring our own next time. The apartment itself was lovely, tucked under the roof, with a roof terrace looking out over Meliskerke. It was charmingly decorated and had everything we needed, including plenty of Nespresso capsules and a few Zeeland treats as a nice surprise. Meliskerke is quiet and not too busy, and worked well as a starting point for exploring Zeeland. There’s plenty of parking and some nice places to sit in the courtyard. We felt right at home and would happily recommend De Zilte Melis.

We arrived to find nobody there and no keys in the safe. After we asked, a very nice woman brought the keys, along with bottled water and snacks to make up for it. The island itself is quite nice, and the accommodation is in a small suburb with a bakery, butcher, and supermarket. The beach and promenade are about 3 km away. It’s a small room with a separate bathroom, and the pictures made it look bigger because they showed the whole building. You can hear other people, as it isn’t soundproof. We had no parking space despite it being advertised, apparently because there are fewer spaces than apartments. Bikes are available to rent, though they seem like old rental bikes with only one gear, or possibly none. Inside, there’s a sink without a plug, kettle, capsule coffee machine, microwave, separate induction hob, TV, air conditioning, and a fan that runs constantly. There’s no bin except in the bathroom, no wardrobe, just a few wall hooks, and no holders for toilet paper or towels. The shower door is quite narrow.
