The breakfast had plenty of variety and was a real highlight, and the staff were especially friendly and helpful. Our room and bathroom were clean, if a little dated, and the bed was comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep. A pleasant stay, with particularly lovely service.

Kobus, our young Labrador, settled into the room and hotel right away, and dogs are welcome all over the island. The breakfast buffet each morning was generous, with coffee, toast, croissants, rolls, eggs, bacon, yoghurt, fresh juice and fruit, sweet rolls, and ontbijtkoek. On arrival, we were offered a delicious local drink to get us into the island mood. Rijk and his family and staff made us feel welcome at historic Hotel Oepkes in West Terschelling. It’s a small hotel with around 20 to 25 rooms, and the service and accommodation felt excellent and personal. Rijk, the owner and manager, also shared lots of stories about the hotel’s history. Our room was comfortable, and the cozy beds and everything else met or exceeded what we expected from a three-star hotel. This is a lovely time of year to visit Terschelling: windy, rainy, and a bit cold, just right for walks in the dunes and along the beaches, or a bike ride around the island. Google, can we give it six stars?

The ferry is only a five-minute walk away, and the hotel sits just off the main street with its restaurants, shops, and bars. We got a warm welcome, a comfortable room, and an excellent breakfast. A perfect base for exploring West Terschelling.
