Thon Hotel Hallingdal

Breakfast was fresh, delicious, and had a good range of choices. We also had a balcony we could step out onto, with a nice view. The hotel is cute and the staff are friendly. The shower temperature and water pressure were better than I expected.

The bathroom light kept flickering. We had booked for three, but when there was no extra bed, they upgraded us to a bigger room. In the evening, the person working at reception was serving guests while drunk, and there was a strong smell of alcohol.

We had two family rooms, both very spacious, clean, and with comfortable beds and soft sheets. The breakfast buffet was fantastic, and everyone enjoyed it. I’d stay again if we had a room with AC. There wasn’t any in our rooms, despite both hotels.com and bookings.com listing it. I get hot at night and prefer a cool room, though leaving the window open kept it cool enough. The downside was traffic noise all night, which woke me several times, although the rest of my family weren’t bothered. The blackout curtains were there, but with the window open, light came through all night. If you don’t mind it being warm, this hotel could be perfect for you.

The room was large, but it had a stale smell that meant we needed to keep airing it out. The hotel is quite old and badly needs refurbishment. The kitchen area wasn’t usable, with a disconnected sink and a fridge that didn’t work, and there were no capsules for the coffee machine. I checked in online, so I didn’t interact much with the front desk staff, but the young woman there seemed overwhelmed by around 100 Chinese tourists filling the reception area. The old lift also felt insecure, and the electric car charging points didn’t work. The only food available was an unappealing buffet for kr245: pale-looking chicken and meat cakes, boiled rice, Toro style packet tomato sauce, and first price pålegg. I’m afraid this wasn’t one of Thon Hotels’ best.
