The free breakfast was good, and our rooms were spotless and much more modern inside than the rustic exterior suggests. We even charged our rental electric car here. It’s about an hour from Pulpit Rock, and the place has a lovely village feel, with a water wheel, grass roofs, and animals you can pet. The gift shop is huge, and the building itself is one of the coolest I’ve seen. They had someone making candles right there. One thing to know if you arrive late: reception is unstaffed, so call ahead and someone can give you the key lockbox code. We didn’t have a SIM card with a phone number, so making that long-distance call was a hassle.

The candle shop beside Byrkjedalstunet has a really unique atmosphere and was a highlight for us. Our stay was lovely, too: the traditional-style cottages have charming rooms, and the staff were so welcoming and friendly that we felt at home. A relaxing, authentic Norwegian experience. Highly recommend it.

We only meant to take a quick break during our road trip, but the lovely, well-kept surroundings and kid-friendly setting kept us there for two hours, eating and walking around. We wished we could have stayed overnight and will definitely return.
