Narvik Budget Rooms

The staff were really kind when we had to leave at 5:30. Since we’d miss breakfast, they prepared a lunchbox, which we appreciated a lot. The location is handy for skiing, with a slope right beside the hotel, and there are two shops nearby. It’s about 15 minutes from the train station, with a nice view too. Check-in and checkout were quick. The room, though, was very cold and couldn’t be warmed up; it was also too dark, with not enough light. A hairdryer would’ve made a big difference, since drying your hair is necessary in the snow.

The room matched its description and was basic, but had what we needed. Breakfast was very good, served next door at Thon Partner Hotel Narvik. Getting there without a car isn’t ideal, as it’s a 20-minute uphill walk from the train station. The check-in was mishandled. Our room was assigned to someone else and our cards were deactivated. Reception said that person noticed belongings in the room and asked for another one. Knowing someone else had been given access made me uncomfortable.

The shower had good pressure and the beds were decent, and there’s a supermarket across the street. But the room was damp and smelled bad, with air that didn’t seem to circulate at all. Towels and wet clothes wouldn’t dry. The building may need renovation soon because there’s no working air conditioning. I only spoke to staff at check-in.

The included breakfast at the adjacent hotel was easily the highlight: filling, with a broad buffet selection, especially welcome given Norway’s high food prices. Staff were polite and accommodating, and although they apparently don’t usually store luggage, they held mine while I waited to leave. I stayed one night on the way from Bodø to Tromsø, and it did the job, but this is a plain stay and I’d recommend it only if you know what to expect. It’s a decent walk from most things in town, around 15 minutes uphill, except Narvikfjellet. The room was bare and dim, with no fridge and no closet large enough for hanging clothes. The linens looked clean apart from a few tiny speckled marks. There was a faint fecal smell that I got used to after a while. The bed was comfortable, though I used the pillow from the other unused bed too. The bathroom was clean and had good hot and cold water. There was no vent fan, but steam cleared fairly fast once I opened the door after showering. Oddly, hand soap was by the shower and shampoo/body wash by the sink. For the price, it wasn’t bad if you don’t need much.
