Sunndalsøra Hotel

The breakfast buffet had a good amount of tasty food, and the staff were friendly the whole time. The hotel also has a family-run feel and sits right in the centre of town, both of which we liked. But I wouldn't recommend it at the moment because of a few things. Our street-facing room was above and opposite several restaurants and bars and a large square, and the noise carried on very loudly until late. We needed earplugs to sleep, even though we're not usually sensitive to noise. It was also much too warm when we arrived, despite it not being the hot season, so we kept the window open all night. The bathroom was tiny, with a shower curtain and what looked like wallpaper on the shower walls. Even as a slim person, I had to stand to one side to use it, especially since I hate having the curtain against my ear. We stayed one weekend night while touring Norway.

The two restaurants next door are a nice bonus, and the room was small but comfortable and clean. Breakfast was great if you want traditional Scandinavian food, with fresh baked bread, granola, yogurt, sliced meats, cheese, sill and more. Don't expect bacon and eggs or omelets. There isn't much choice in town, since the other "hotel" is a prefab dorm in a campground, so this place costs around 100-200kr more than normal.

The breakfast had very little variety, and the room was small and below the standard of hotels I've stayed at in other Norwegian cities. Sunndalsøra isn't a city, either, so the price felt too high compared with other places in Norway. In the off season, I think the hotel could make a bit more effort for guests, perhaps by offering a better room when there's little else to provide beyond a place to sleep and an ordinary breakfast. I enjoy trying hotels whether they're in a city or a small village.

There are several stores nearby, and the bus stop is right beside the hotel, with a taxi office close by too. It's the only hotel in the area. Our double room was spacious enough for three, and they agreed to add an extra bed for my daughter.
