Hotel Swiss Family Home

The people are what made my month-long retreat stay here so meaningful. Mikmak, Dolma, the owner and the whole team were caring, attentive, and always ready to help with anything I needed. Pharping felt like a supportive place to practice and turn inward. The rooms I saw, nearly all of them, had lovely woodwork and thangkas that made them feel warm and soulful. My own kitchen had everything I needed, and when I needed something extra, it was arranged easily. I also used a small electric heater on cold evenings, which kept things comfortable. There were a few water problems, including trouble with the shower. Still, the warm, caring atmosphere mattered more to me than having everything technically perfect. The hillside setting has a beautiful view, too.

The family kitchen and dining room, with its big fireplace, made meals feel personal. Breakfast and dinner were served there, the food was plentiful and good, and we got to meet the friendly people running the place as well as other guests. Our room was in the newer building, with a wide balcony looking toward Kathmandu and a spectacular view. It was clean and spacious, with a double bed, kitchenette with gas stove, kettle, sink and fridge, plus a wood oven for heat and a ceiling fan. There was no AC, but we didn't need it. The windows had mosquito nets. The place sits on a steep hillside just below Pharping, part hotel and part family stay. It's in a residential area of small houses. The narrow lane stops short, so cars can't reach the hotel and you walk the last 150 meters from the monastery. If you call, someone will kindly help carry your bags, which was welcome with three flights of stairs to our room. A shorter footpath leads into town, though it has no streetlights at night, unlike the side street. From upstairs you can see neighbors going about their daily lives. Dogs bark at night, just as they do in Kathmandu. Pharping is quieter than the busy valley, and the air is cooler and fresher, though people sometimes seem to burn trash nearby. The access road had quite a lot of landslide debris. I'm not sure if that's usual, but rainy-season travel could be affected. Otherwise, we had a pleasant, personal stay and I'd choose it again.

We were in Pharping with a group studying at a nearby monastery, and the group filled the whole house. Swiss Family kept up with the demanding schedule and served us three excellent meals a day, with a mix of Nepali and western food. Meals were very rarely late, and service was good throughout. My wife and I stayed for four weeks and had a wonderful time, largely thanks to the warm hospitality from Stefan, Pasang, and the five young staff members. Since the house was full, we were given a smaller room that isn't usually rented. It had been Stefan's teenage daughter's bedroom, with decor to match, and no view. We got a lower price, so that didn't affect my rating. We'd be happy to stay there again for a retreat.

A good spot in quiet Pharping if you're looking to meditate, unwind, or escape the everyday noise. The garden, views, peaceful atmosphere, and the owners' hospitality all add to the feel. The apartments are spacious and equipped well, though they vary quite a bit, so I'd look at each available one before deciding. I did run into an issue with the hot water sometimes being off. You can switch it back on, but ask the owners where the switch is.
