The main drawback was getting to the village. Although it's advertised as a 15-minute walk, the route follows a country road without a footpath, and it felt too dangerous to walk after dark. The staff kindly drove us, but that meant leaving the pub before 10. The standalone cabin itself was clean and comfortable, with a great log burner and well-kept grounds, though the inside was a little dated.

We loved sitting out on the patio and taking in the view over Akaroa Bay. The cottage had everything we needed, from a full kitchen and jacuzzi bathtub to robes and a comfortable bed. Out of all our stays in New Zealand, this remains one of our favourites. We didn't want to leave and can't wait to return.

The photos don't quite capture how lovely the seaside view is, especially at dawn with the town lights still on. We spent the first two nights of our honeymoon here and found the bedroom, living area and fully equipped small kitchenette just the right size. The furnishings were comfortable, and tea, coffee and milk were replenished each day. The staff made us feel welcome straight away, even with our late-night check-in. On the second night the room heater stopped working, but we used the fireplace and the supplied firewood, along with the two extra heaters. If I return to Akoroa, I'd stay here again.

We were cold during our June stay because the heating wasn't enough, and although there was a fireplace, no wood had been left for it. The spa bath wasn't quite clean, and there were no bath salts or bubbles. For heritage accommodation, I expected more of the finer touches you might get in a four-star place. When reception was unattended at checkout, we had to go back and leave the keys in the room. I probably won't return.

The cottage interior brought the stay down. It needs an upgrade, and better-quality bed linen would make a difference. The setting was lovely, tucked in the bush with plenty of birds and just outside town.
