Auckland City Hotel

There were some useful basics: breakfast ran from 7-10, the rooms were clean, and the staff were helpful. Since level one has no lift, they even offered to carry our bags upstairs. The location was convenient, soap was by the sink, shampoo and conditioner were in the shower, and there were three laundry rooms. The gym was really more of a workout shed, with a weight bench and a few free weights, plus random stuff scattered beside it. The TV remote didn’t work, so we had to connect to a phone. Light switches were dotted all over instead of grouped in one place. In the bathroom, there were towels but no other amenities or slippers, just one towel rack, and no mat for getting out of the shower. We’d paid the same at another hotel that had bathroom amenities, a pool, and a much better gym with separate cardio, strength, and yoga spaces, plus cool towels, fruit, and towels. I’m not sure I’d trade all of that for breakfast.

The staff were friendly and even brought colouring materials to my daughter at breakfast. The included breakfast was a nice bonus, and the rooms were clean and had everything we needed. I’d found the location handy when I stayed here five years ago, and this visit was even better. Great value for money.

We appreciated the hotel’s 20% dinner voucher, and housekeeping kept the spacious room nicely made up throughout our stay. It felt almost like a small apartment, with the basic equipment needed to be comfortable. Breakfast was the main thing I’d change. Across our four nights, the menu stayed the same each day, so more variety would have been welcome. Slippers in the room would also be helpful. Still, it was a comfortable and convenient place to stay in Auckland.

Getting a greeting card for my special occasion was such a lovely touch, and the staff were genuinely warm. Check-in and checkout were easy, and they handled our room requests cooperatively. The fitness centre also felt very private. One small hassle was that housekeeping took the key card that powers the room without checking first. The floors are beautifully polished, though a rug by the kitchenette would make that area less slippery. A very pleasant stay.
