The room could have used a much more thorough clean: there were dried splashes under the bed storage, dust on the windowsill, old hair ties by the bed, and a broken roller blind wedged beside it. I also saw a broken door near the sofa room that looked like it had been left that way for a while. The hostel overall felt worn and due for a refresh. The atmosphere seemed okay, but it didn’t feel especially warm or welcoming compared with other hostels I’ve stayed in. I might come back if there weren’t better choices, but I wouldn’t hurry back. There were some good points. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful, and the building was easy to find. The bed was comfortable, and all the outlets beside it worked. The communal living room looked nice, though I barely used it. The large kitchen felt chaotic and poorly organised. Clearly labelled bins or containers would help, instead of bags with random labels or sticks. Some food marked free was mixed in with the regular food, and another guest had to show me where to find it. I also couldn’t tell whether the spray bottles by the sinks held dish soap or surface cleaner.

Reception staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, but the location was the only real plus for me. This is the worst Haka House I’ve stayed in. The dorm was tiny for six people, barely bigger than a jail cell, and hard to move around in once someone opened their luggage. It also felt unsafe in case of a fire or other emergency. The room was extremely hot, and the blocked windows meant there was no way to get fresh air. The common areas were below average and cleanliness didn’t seem to be a priority. There were only about five toilets and three showers for the whole floor, and several kitchen fridges and freezers weren’t working. Street works or something similar started very early, around 5-6 am, and woke me up. Sleeping was already difficult because of the heat. If you can afford it, Lylo on Cook Street in the CBD is much better value for money.

I was really happy with my choice of Haka House in Auckland and would strongly recommend staying here. Everything felt spacious, tidy, and cozy. The mattress and cushions were comfortable, and the linens were fresh and warm. The bed and bathroom were kept perfectly clean, which matters a lot to me. A fantastic stay, five stars all around.

The staff know their stuff and are so friendly. They made me feel welcome as soon as I came in and were always available to help. It’s centrally located, and the rooms and facilities are good. I especially liked the privacy curtain and having power sockets right by the bed. A pool table would be a nice addition.

I wouldn’t consider this suitable for school groups or young people. The rooms didn’t feel safe and weren’t very clean, and the second-floor windows opened all the way. When I asked the receptionist to move my school group to different rooms, they didn’t want to know.
