Inside, the dated units have slow internet, a cheap rotating fan that barely helps with the heat or flies, and ants for company. The main photo of the lovely old villa gives a misleading impression. The advertised private courtyard is hard to use: the doors and windows are rotten or sealed shut, and the overgrown grass, rubbish and long-term tenants' rope clothesline make it unappealing. The shower wand has to hang down at floor level because the constant dripping bothers the other tenants. It's a cheap, nasty place, and doesn't deserve its Remuera location. It looks like the owners are just land banking while letting the accommodation deteriorate.

The room was quite warm, and the place is a bit far from central Auckland. Service was okay, but when I arrived they said I had to pay an extra 25 NZD because they were overbooked. I don't think I'd stay again.

Parking was great, but the Wi-Fi was a complete letdown. It never worked properly, so I couldn't get work done or watch a YouTube video without interruptions. I raised it with Kate, who is in charge of the hotel, several times. She kept saying she'd fix it, but nothing changed. A speed test showed 4.3 Mb/s download and 1.6 Mb/s upload.

Lots of parking, shops nearby, and the person checking us in was nice. The Devereux Hotel has a clear look and feel, and the room fit that style, but the bathroom setup made it a poor choice for a family. Its door was basically a window with a semi-see-through cover, so there was no privacy when the light was on. It also sits between the entry and the living and sleeping area. There wasn't a good spot to charge devices, the bed kept rolling when I tried to sit up, and there was basically no kitchenette or dining space. I'd suggest it for a couple rather than a family.

There are good places to eat nearby, and the staff were helpful and friendly. The room was lovely and had everything I needed. I'll come back when I'm in Auckland again.
