The flatmate situation was also rough, though to be fair, management couldn’t do anything about that. It was the icing on the cake. When I left, no one showed up for the check-out inspection, so I had to leave without a final meeting to catch my flight. I was there for a three-month internship and should have chosen somewhere else. The rooms were bare and uninviting, and weren’t always clean on arrival, with a broken desk chair and stains on the wall. Barbara, the receptionist, repeatedly miscalculated my rent and charged too much. Bed linen cost NZD 160, which seemed unreasonable, and each wash in the machines cost another NZD 4-5. The shower already had a lot of mould when I arrived. After I’d been there just three weeks, someone inspected the flat before a new flatmate arrived and reported it to Barbara. She blamed us and threatened a penalty if it happened again, though none of us had lived there long enough to be responsible for the mould. I never want to live there again and was glad to finally leave.

It could have been a good visit, but the place was dark and there were cobwebs everywhere. The fridge smelled bad and was dirty, and we had to wipe the dishes before using them.

I lived in one of the apartments for two years and was very happy there. My room faced Oakley Creek, so I could hear lots of birds and no traffic. The rooms and facilities were very nice. The wooden floors can be noisy if you have heavy-footed neighbours upstairs, so you may need to keep in comm with Barbara. I had good comm with her, and any discrepancies were sorted quickly and easily. There was always someone I could get in comm with when an issue came up. It’s a pleasant place in a handy spot for shops, markets, and the highway. I loved the long walks through Oakley Creek and the great walker / biker tracks that go from the far side of the creek all the way to Pak'nSave, Mt Albert. I’d recommend these apartments for short-term accommodation.

The apartment manager, an elderly woman with a sharp, sarcastic manner, treats Chinese students with what feels like contemptuous smiles and impatient waves. On rainy days, she keeps cars waiting outside and sends students running through the rain to them. I don’t know whether she treats only Chinese students this way. I wonder if she’s related to the school administrator, since someone so unkind is managing students. I’ve learned that not all older people are kind, and unkind people grow old too. If you’re thinking of living here, think it over first.

This place is filthy and feels toxic. I can’t believe anyone is allowed to stay here. You’ll find much nicer, cheaper options elsewhere in Auckland. The woman, Barbara, was awful to deal with and offered no help at all. Authorities really need to look into this place. Don’t stay here or live here.
