My daughter was studying in New Zealand for a semester, having come from Upstate New York in the US, and after several unfortunate, improbable, weather-related events she ended up stranded in Auckland while trying to reach Wellington. She did her best to get to college by herself and made it as far as Bulls, about 2.5 hours from her destination. With no clear way forward or travel options for the rest of the night, she was frightened and exhausted, unsure what to do next. Her college liaison somehow knew to contact Lancewood Lodge. They offered to pick her up nearby, look after her, and make sure she could catch a bus to Wellington the next morning. As far as I can tell, shuttle service or travel help like that isn’t normally part of what they offer. They did it because they’re warm, compassionate people who made a young woman feel safe and cared for when she needed help. I haven’t stayed at Lancewood Lodge myself, so I can’t speak to the premises or how close it is to attractions. I can say how they made my daughter feel. As a parent on the other side of the globe, anxiously waiting for word that someone could help her, I’ll always be grateful she found such people there.

The neighbours were lovely, and I enjoyed them more than the owners, who were rude and unwelcoming. My bed had stains and was crawling with bugs, and the sleeping arrangement was horrible. I wouldn’t recommend booking here. The hospitality just wasn’t there.

A warm, quiet, comfortable place to take a break from the Te Araroa trail. Rhys & Jo were really friendly and helpful.

Parking was easy and safely off the road, and the house itself is gorgeous and immaculate. There was plenty of hot water, and Rhys and his mum were both so friendly. The location worked well for us after leaving Christchurch that morning, catching the 2pm ferry and driving north. We got into Bulls around 8pm. Lovely place to stay.
