We arrived exhausted after hours of driving in the rain, with children and four or five suitcases. The front desk handed us a key without much courtesy and said our room was upstairs, reached by a very narrow outdoor staircase. When we asked about switching to a ground floor room, he impatiently said our booking only had second floor rooms available unless we took a smaller room, which wouldn’t work for our family. We spent over ten minutes going back and forth while he kept saying he couldn’t understand us. When we finally asked for help with the luggage, he reluctantly carried only our smallest case to the top of the stairs and left, even though the walkway was still exposed to the rain. That service was the worst we’ve experienced in many years of travel, especially surprising in New Zealand, known for hospitality. The property looks fairly new, but the overall stay fell far short of expectations: no elevator, small rooms with poor sound insulation, and weak Wi-Fi. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel.

After our international flight was cancelled, we needed somewhere to spend the night in Christchurch and ended up at Grand Riccarton. It was a welcome place to land after a long day sorting out travel plans. The staff were extremely welcoming and accommodating, the rooms were clean and well stocked, and the restaurant served an amazing curry dinner.

Buses stop right outside and can take you close to the shops, park, city, or airport. From our point of view, the location and comfort were excellent. The rooms were very clean and set up well for a comfortable stay, with a large shower and plenty of shelves for personal things. Wifi was good, parking was easy, and there was a good meeting room and bar.

We stayed on 31/10/2025. I booked The Grand Riccarton Hotel the day before, and the initial service was great. Staff offered to try to arrange early check-in, but the room wasn’t ready when we arrived. That wasn’t a big deal for us. At first the room looked tidy and clean, but there were ants climbing the wall. Reception dealt with them quickly, though they returned later that night. Our room was at the far end of the building, with a bright streetlight shining in. The blinds didn’t shut properly, so it stayed bright all night and was hard to sleep. Then buses parked right outside the window at about 7am, so there was no sleeping in. I was also disappointed about the advertised “gym access.” The flyer made it sound included, but I was told it cost extra to use Anytime Fitness Riccarton. I went myself and got a cheaper rate than the hotel offered. The advertising could be clearer. Some of the bedding had stains too, which added to the disappointment given this wasn’t a budget stay. Overall, it was quiet but underwhelming, and I wouldn’t stay again.

Rabul and Puja were friendly and helpful hosts, and I enjoyed my stay. The place was very clean, and the upstairs rooms had a nice view of the hills. My room had been refurbished, with a comfy bed, nice carpet, and a clean new bathroom. Great location too. I’ll be back.
