Kingsgate Hotel Dunedin

The staff deserve top marks, they were really friendly and helpful. My room had a nice outlook, but there was a hum all night that made it hard to sleep. The location was okay. The whole hotel feels very tired and needs an upgrade, from reception and dining room through to the rooms.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, and it was a very nice place overall. The bathrooms could use some work. Parking was a hassle because the lot was full, so we had to pay for street parking. The hotel is on a steep hill, though it’s very close to downtown.

I enjoyed my four nights and would stay here again. Breakfast was a nice bonus, always fresh and hot, and the staff were friendly and obliging. The room had a clean, comfortable bed, a hot shower with good pressure, a hair dryer, air con unit and heater. It’s perfectly placed near the Octagon, an easy walk to shops, cafes and interesting landmarks. The hand wash bottle was difficult to use, and one light bulb had gone, but neither was a big concern. No complaints.

A good option if you’re watching your budget, and the free breakfast is really tasty. The hotel makes a convenient base for exploring Dunedin CBD, close to Meridian Mall, Golden Mall, Wall Street Mall, Woolworths, the Dunedin District Court, Dunedin Train Station, Otago Museum, University Of Otago, McDonald's, Dunedin Library and several other places. I highly recommend it.
