We loved our week-before-Christmas stay in the two-bedroom villa with our four-year-old. It had everything we needed, including a full kitchen, bathroom, laundry and two large bedrooms. Our son had a great time biking around the huge grounds and using the swing. There's also a great BBQ area, so I'd suggest bringing food to cook, though we didn't get a chance to use it. The owners had put a bottle of wine in the fridge, just right for enjoying the views as soon as we arrived.

I usually come to the Coromandel peninsula with Family and stay just outside Coromandel town, so staying at Mercury Villas while taking part in the K1 Cycle race was a real treat. The Villas sit along the race course, making them a handy base for your support team to cheer you on. Each one was in immaculate, modern condition. I arrived in the evening and woke to an amazing panoramic view of the Coromandel peninsula, a view I'd never seen before. Breakfast on the deck or an evening BBQ with that backdrop is something else.

This is a quiet getaway, well away from everyday bustle, but still only minutes from some of the Coromandel's prettiest beaches and close to two popular towns. The coastline view is spectacular, like something from a New Zealand travel brochure. The villas are thoughtfully laid out for couples or larger families, with everything you need except food, and free Wi-Fi too. We really wish we'd had more time here. We'll definitely return.

The view is spectacular, looking right across to the Mercury Islands with nothing in front. My wife and I spent five nights in the three-bedroom Villa at Mercury Villas, and the gorgeous setting really impressed us. It was brand new, with very comfortable beds, great bathrooms and a bath in the main one. The living area was comfortable too, and the kitchen had all the pans and utensils we needed, just like home, including a gas stovetop. We'd definitely recommend it for a relaxing break. We had some trouble finding the place at first, but Google Maps made it easy. It's a good idea to buy groceries in Whitianga, since Kuaotunu mainly has a pizza shop with great pizza and a corner store. Dennis Colquitt

Full bifold doors open onto the deck, so the views are completely unobstructed, and even the kitchen sink looks out over them. The house is well equipped and a great place to get away from the rat race and unwind. There are beautiful beaches nearby, and Luke's Kitchen down the road has a good casual menu if you don't want to cook. Try the Kuatouna Killer from the local shop too, it's an ice cream. Loved our stay and we'll be back.
