The hostel is about half an hour from Nelson, which we hadn’t realised at first. It was also noisy: drunk people outside woke me, and the man in the next room snored deeply. Still, everything was clean, with crisp sheets and the kitchen and bathroom cleaned daily. The owners were nice, and I’d recommend staying here.

Motueka makes a great base for visiting Abel Tasman, Kahurangi and Golden Bay, and the hostel is right by the Sunday market site, across from the i-SITE and between the two main supermarkets. The main street is only steps away. I could book a room after reception hours by calling the manager’s cellphone. The place was impressively clean, with comfortable beds, a well-equipped kitchen, two balconies and free parking out back.

Everything was spotless, and it’s clear the owners cared for the place rather than just trying to make money from backpackers. It was one of the cleanest, best-equipped hostels I’ve stayed in. I’m sorry the Covid crisis led the owners to sell so soon. If this lovely couple ever returns to the hostel business, I’d happily recommend them. Much love.

The room was clean and tidy, and the place is central with good off-street parking. I stayed two nights in July and got invited to a local Poker Game at check-in. It was a fantastic evening and a great way to meet locals. You should put it on the info board. I’d stay again.

Pretty good location, and I liked the kitchen, shared space and balcony. There’s no free WiFi here, but the city’s free WiFi reaches the whole place. The room outlets switch off after 30 minutes, so they’re useless for charging, though you can use the plugs in the main area. An OK backpacker spot.
