Mt Cook Lodge & Motels

We could reach all the walks from here without driving, which was perfect. Reception and the bar were a short walk away, and the hotel and village were about a 15-minute walk. We stayed two nights in a Family Motel Room, which was nicely presented and worked well for three adults. It could suit a small family, too. There was a small kitchenette, two queen-size beds, one in the living area, and a patio with stunning mountain views. The TV didn’t work, possibly because the mountain location doesn’t get an antenna signal, but we didn’t really need it. A pleasant stay, and I’d come back.

Everyone at the hotel was friendly, from reception through to the rest of the staff. I stayed three nights in a rented room, which was very large and clean, with an exceptionally well-designed bathroom and hot water available around the clock. Breakfast was excellent, and all the dishes were delicious. There are two restaurants here. The one opposite is a good dinner option, with reasonable prices, and I’d recommend it. Anyone travelling to South New Zealand should stay here for at least two days.

We didn’t interact much with the front desk, so my three-star service rating is a guess. The motel room was spacious and clean, but moths kept coming in even though we never opened the windows, which was quite annoying and why the room only gets three stars. The location could be called great, but I think Mt Cook is a classic tourist trap. There are only three very short walking routes and three strenuous alpine routes.

We found this a comfortable, convenient place for our group of five, and good value for the money in the heart of Aoraki/Mt Cook. Our room at Mt Cook Lodge & Motels had two single beds, one queen bed, and a sofa bed. It was clean and tidy, with very comfortable beds and the best pillows I’ve had. We slept really well after a long day exploring Mt Cook. The room was set up well for self-catering, with a cooker, microwave, utensils, dishwashing liquid, and everything else we needed. Check-in was smooth, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. There’s a bond required, so bring a credit or debit card. It’s refunded at checkout, though bank processing can take longer over public holidays. If you plan to cook, buy groceries ahead of time. We recommend stopping at Four Square in Lake Tekapo. Simple meals are fine here, but avoid strong spices that might leave lingering smells.
