Haka House Queenstown

For 150 NZD a night, I expected more. The walls and windows barely keep out noise, and being right on the main road made the rooms extremely loud. There are no toilets in the rooms, and 30 people share just three toilets and two showers, with not even one toilet on every floor. The room was clean, which is why I'm giving it two stars. I hope I never have to sleep here again.

The location was handy for town, but I paid more here than at Melbourne Lodge on the same street, where I'd stayed the night before my four-day hike. At Haka House I was on the top floor, with no air conditioning, only a pedestal fan. The afternoon westerly sun made the room really hot, and the badly hung curtain left the top half of the window uncovered. There were no fly screens, and I woke up to six bees in the room. Traffic noise was also quite noticeable. The shower had no soap, shampoo, or conditioner, even though I've had those supplied at places costing less per night.

The bathrooms and dorms were super clean, and the staff were amazingly friendly. It's a great hostel, a nice middle size, with a big choice of classic movies and a really comfy sofa.

The whole hostel feels welcoming, and it's clean and quiet. Queenstown's a perfect base from here, with easy parking on site. Thanks to Jasmine for being so kind and friendly!
