Peppers Beacon Queenstown

We booked a king-size room well ahead of time, but the day before arrival someone called to ask if we wanted twin beds and what time we’d get there. I gave an ETA of around 10:30 a.m. and said we were happy to drop our bags and wait until 2 p.m. They said they might be able to check us in after lunch and would call. We left our bags and went into town, but no one called. At 3:45 p.m. we returned and were told the room still needed another hour, so we were given a different one. The bed was uncomfortable, with a topper on only one side. There was mould on the bathroom tile grout and fittings, plus an old, mouldy MDF set of drawers. The shower kept switching between scalding hot and cold. There was a crack in the wall plaster, and the phone handset fell off, making the phone useless. Housekeeping came just once during our four days, the soundproofing between rooms was poor, and our key access had only been set for two days. You won’t get my money again, though I’m sure you won’t care. This shouldn’t be advertised as luxury accommodation.

The front desk team were lovely, and the property itself is beautiful in a great spot. The housekeeping and upkeep need more attention, though. We went two days without service and had to request fresh towels, and there was black and pink mold around the tub deck in the master bathroom. With better oversight of cleaning and maintenance, this place could be five-star.

The staff were so helpful, and the manager really went out of their way for us. Our two-bedroom apartment was first on the ground floor by the road, so we asked about moving somewhere higher with a better view. They sorted it for the following day, and the new room was amazing. We were very happy with our stay.

The room was great and so was the location, and the staff were good too. Still, we spent five of our six days dealing with construction, scaffolding going up and renovation work next door. The Wi-Fi was also very poor, and staff didn’t seem to care when we raised it. Nobody had warned us about the works. At close to $400 NZD a night for a one-bedroom, that was disappointing.
