The Flaming Kiwi Backpacker

Such a lovely atmosphere, and one of the highlights of our NZ trip ❤️ The staff and other people were beautiful and always ready to help, and they really made us feel at home. They also put on cute little nights so people staying at the hostel can get to know each other while backpacking. The most amazing hostel ever!! ❤️❤️

I meant to stay at Flaming Kiwi Backpackers for two weeks, but after that I just couldn't bring myself to leave. I ended up spending five months there, including a long-term stay when there was availability. After six years of travelling, it's my favorite hostel by far. It was always clean and well organized, and there was always someone around to help. I made friends who became family. The place is cozy and has loads of storage, and the quiz, bingo, and movie nights were great. Huge thanks to Josh and Jose, and everyone who puts in the work to make guests feel at home. If you're unsure about booking, just go for it.

The cabin itself met and even beat our expectations, but the parking situation was really disappointing. We were told only after paying that spaces were scarce and handed out first come, first served. The booking site had advertised parking without saying it was limited, and by then we couldn't change our plans. One night there was no space for us, and street parking wasn't available either. It took over an hour to sort out. We had to pay for overnight parking, take an Uber back in the rain, then get up early the next morning before that parking ran out. Not a pleasant experience. They should be clear in the listing that parking is limited, or assign spaces.

The staff were kind, parking was handy, and the social side of the hostel really made it for us. The facilities are basic, but those things more than made up for it. Great stay, and we'd recommend it to anyone. Thanks for having us!
