The lake and beach are both close enough to reach on foot, and Hokitika town centre is only a quick drive away. Our room had its own bathroom, and the shower was fantastic. The weak point was the WiFi. It barely worked during our stay, so don’t count on having a dependable connection.

The kitchen had everything we needed, and the place was clean and roomy. We also loved the comfy corner for relaxing and playing games, plus the pub was a lovely spot to linger. The sea is right there, with a huge, beautiful beach just a short walk over the dunes. We hadn’t planned ahead, but managed to get a camper spot at Lake Mahinapua Hotel and were really glad we did. They let us know beforehand there could be some noise from a karaoke party, which was fine with us. We were greeted so warmly and even shown around. It was one of the most comfortable places we’ve stayed on this trip, and among the best-value prices too. Wish we could’ve stayed longer. We’d happily come back.

The hot tub was a real treat, and the facilities were spotless. I stayed overnight in my van, with the beach just a couple of minutes away on foot and the lake also within walking distance. The pub had good food and a nice range of drinks. They gave me a heads-up when I arrived that a party was happening that night, which I appreciated and didn’t mind. A great stop if you’re passing through or want to stay the night.

Sofie and Gabbie made the whole night feel special. After dancing hard in the costume contest, we got a delicious cocktail for free. Sofie made me feel at home, picked great karaoke songs, and kept the party lively. She had us laughing and involved, and her charm helped us feel safe while still being silly. Gabbie made tasty drinks, got everyone hyped, and was fantastic on the mic as host. She brought a real NYC nightlife feel to the bar. Sofie also told us about the glow worms in the forest, and seeing them was magical. There isn’t much in the middle of nowhere, but these two warm, charismatic women made the whole town feel full. I’d probably come back to Lake Mahinapua just to see them.

The staff member who served us was friendly and easy to chat with. It’s a lively place, with music playing both inside and outside, and seems to draw a party crowd. There’s a big garden with lots of seating, while indoors there are a couple of dining rooms, nicely decorated. One odd thing was having to walk past guest rooms to reach the toilets. There was just one sink outside the toilet, which wasn’t ideal.
