The hotel feels like a practical, affordable place by the sea, rather than a luxury resort, and some rooms may seem dated. Still, the setting is a big part of the appeal. You can get to Sur’s dhow yards, seafood restaurants, turtle watching spots and nearby beaches without a long drive. Sur Corniche, dhow viewpoints and waterfront sunsets are close by too. Al Ayjah Plaza Hotel sits among mountain views, the sea and the Al Ayjah Lighthouse, in a quieter, more traditional part of town. Walking around Al Ayjah Bridge and the lighthouse in the evening was memorable. The rooms are simple and cosy, and some look out over the sea. Watching fishing boats on the water and harbor lights come on at night gave the stay a peaceful, nostalgic feel. Depending on the room, some facilities might feel dated. I’d pick a higher floor with a sea view for the best scenery, especially if you like taking photos or watching the sunrise. It’s a calm spot along Oman’s eastern coast, with a lovely seaside atmosphere and a great place to watch the sunset.

The meal was so bad we couldn’t eat it. The beef and chicken biryani had meat that was black and rubbery and seemed rotten, and the rice tasted old and hard. When we raised it, the chef argued and kept saying the food was fresh. We were also asked to pay extra for little things, which made the place feel like a money trap. It came across as extortion-like, not hospitality. I rarely write reviews like this, but people should know. I wouldn’t risk being scammed or getting sick here.

Good for a night, though I probably wouldn’t choose it for a longer stay. The rooms are plain but spacious, and the hotel is conveniently located along the road, near the sea and several nice parts of town. There’s a restaurant right beside the hotel with tasty, authentic food. Breakfast is simple and perfectly fine.

We were pleased with our stay for what we paid, about £30 a night with breakfast. The hotel has lots of character, though it’s dated and could use an update. Our room was large with a lovely sea view. For a great view over Sur at sunset, take the short climb to the watchtower behind the hotel.

The receptionist was friendly, and the hotel was clean and well kept. It’s quite old, with old furniture, but still a decent place to stay in Sur. A sea-view room gives you a beautiful sunset.
