The setting is lovely, with mountains all around, quiet grounds, and a gorgeous dog for company. But for 40 soles a night to camp, I expected somewhere indoors to cook or shelter from rain, and a more welcoming host. We arrived on our motorbike and Erick let us in, then disappeared without telling us where to find bins, water, or Wi-Fi. We also hoped to ask about motorbike routes nearby, but couldn’t find him. The camping spot was behind the lodge in long, uncut grass. When my partner had a stomach bug, I mentioned it to Erick, but he didn’t offer the empty dining room as a place to sit. No one else was staying there then. The toilet and shower worked fine, but they were dirty, with mouse droppings on the toilet and floor. My partner was asked to charge his phone outside at the charging point. I chose camping because of my budget, but other reviews mentioned kitchen access. Maybe Erick is more involved with guests in high season, especially since he’s a fellow motorcyclist.

The kids were happy exploring the lodge grounds, which gave my mom and me a chance to unwind between outings. They could use the hammocks, outdoor wooden playground, climbing walls, and rooftop terrace on the small four-storey building, with mountain views and foosball. There were fruit trees, a chicken coop, and two very sweet dogs who loved playing fetch. Our little house was clean and comfortable, and the place felt charming, peaceful, and safe. We stayed five nights in the first week of January 2026, with my mom and daughters, who were 8 and 11. Since they aren’t used to trekking and we wanted to learn about the culture, meet people, and try new things, we asked Eric to arrange excursions that weren’t too long. He understood what would work for us and often chatted with the girls to keep them entertained. Sometimes other guests came along, which was fun and gave us a chance to talk with people from Lima. Eric speaks French, which was perfect for my kids since we live in Montreal, Canada. We’re definitely planning to come back.

Erick, the owner, arranged transport for us up to the gorgeous laguna. We spent two peaceful, restful days at apu eco lodge during a long bike trip, camping on the grounds. There’s room for camper vans, plus lovely bungalows. We could relax in the hammocks or head up to the rooftop to look at the mountains. It’s a quiet spot, and it’s pet friendly, with a dog, cats, and chickens living there.

After our bikepacking trip in the Cordillera Blanca, we settled in at Apu for a few quiet, relaxing days. We camped and made use of the warm showers, laundry lines, and peaceful grounds. The place is beautiful, and there are bungalows and rooms too. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We rented 2 backpacks and left our bicycles there while we did the Santa Cruz hike. The owner shared lots of local recommendations and helped arrange transport. Getting into town was easy with the quick tuktuk ride, 2sol/person. We loved our stay and would recommend it.

The people working here, including the volunteers, made me feel at home right away. You can tell they put effort into making guests comfortable. I arrived without expectations and ended up loving what the lodge has to offer. Waking up to mountain views, cuddly dogs, and breakfast in the sunshine on the grass was lovely. The property itself is beautiful, and the kitchens are well equipped. Erick, the owner, offers several tours, so I joined the Santa Cruz trek. He knows the route well and made sure I felt safe. The scenery was stunning, and I’m glad I went. After the trek, you can have a good beer, including one Erick makes himself. If you need a break from travelling but still want an adventure, I’d really recommend this lodge. Thanks for everything, Erick and everyone else :)
