San Pedro market is right around the corner, handy for local food and anything else you might need for your trip. The main plaza is about a ten-minute walk away. We stayed a couple of days at Cofico Hostel and loved it. It was one of the cheapest places we found, with both dorms and double rooms like the one we needed as a couple. The place is clean and well organised, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Their advice made a real difference to our Machupicchu visit and self-guided hike. Facilities were better than at other places we stayed: lounge areas, a TV room, pool table, table soccer, and three wifi networks so you can stay online. I'd definitely stay at Cofico again if I come back to Cusco, and recommend it.

The place was filthy and messy. The owner turned out to be physically dangerous, though this was one extreme incident that happened, and we wouldn't have gone in if we'd known. You might end up with your belongings stolen, bed bugs, or someone peeping at you in the shower. I'm a woman, though that doesn't really matter. That isn't our idea of a good time.
