Waves Surf Camp Peru - Hostel

Francisca cooked three meals a day, and she was amazing about my pescatarian diet. I’m going to miss the papaya smoothies and fried eggs in the morning. The restaurants are an easy walk from camp, and there’s laundry on-site, though it’s air dry only. In winter, the clubs and bars are closed. The rooftop has a lovely view and a hot tub that’s turned on in summer. Coco, the surf instructor, and Giancarlo, the owner, drove us to surf spots twice a day. I spent a week at Waves Surf Camp in Punta Hermosa, Peru, even though I couldn’t surf or swim when I arrived. We had two lessons each day. The people who already surfed got to try the waves at different beaches, while I worked with Coco in a calm pool, learning to face my fear of the ocean. The staff really helped me feel comfortable in the water, and it’s an experience I won’t forget. The rooms aren’t like a high-end hotel, but that didn’t matter to me with such beautiful beaches and good people around. If you’re very small, under a size 2, you may want to bring your own wetsuit. I had a wonderful stay and hope to come back in summer to experience Punta Hermosa then.

The good vibes from people at camp and around town made this a really fun stay. I liked it so much I stayed longer, as did some other travelers. Giancarlo and Arturo went out of their way to make sure everyone was having a good time. There’s plenty of good surfing within walking distance, and the camp van takes people to the beach twice a day. I took lessons over a week and felt like I was improving every day. Wetsuit and boot rentals were comfortable, too. A week meant a lot of surfing and some shoulder burn for me. I’d plan a full rest day every three days or so. There’s an affordable deep tissue massage place within walking distance.

Good value for money, with simple but tasty breakfasts and a lovely family running this small surfhouse in Punta Hermosa. A few surf spots are within walking distance. You can rent a board and choose a shared or private room.

We surfed in the mornings and afternoons during our month there, and found great waves every day. San Bartolo, Puerto Viejo and Cierro Azul were our favorite spots. We had no surfing experience before arriving, but loved our stay. The camp company was great, and Giancarlo went out of his way to help us feel at ease and accommodate our requests. It’s a very chill place in Punta Hermosa, with nice food nearby and good value for money. Thanks, we’re looking forward to staying there again!
