La Patarashca Hotel

The atmosphere here is what makes the place so special, and the food is a bonus. I came back several times. First I had the poke salad, which hit the spot. On my second visit, we tried the grilled fish sampler, the only way I can describe it. It was BANANAS. They brought out a platter with something like a fish sausage. I'd never had a sausage made of fish before. AMAZING!

The included breakfasts were generous, and my paiche dinner was delicious. The welcome drink was a nice touch too, though I wish there had been more choices. I don't drink alcohol, and the only option for me was one specific juice. I spent two nights at Patarashca. Kimberly, Amy and Issac in the dining room were especially caring and friendly. The one problem was the hot water: one night there wasn't any. Reception said they knew about it and expected it to be fixed by morning, but it still wasn't working then.

That loud voice calling staff by name across the grounds sounded like a dramatic long-term guest who needed a hobby. It was the hotel parrot, living freely and clearly enjoying itself. The garden feels like a jungle, and the artwork is incredible. You can forget you're in the city. The owners and management have clearly put a lot of effort into the place. Service was wonderful from the start: the receptionist welcomed us warmly, and Alongtoi kept the poolside drinks coming. I've stayed everywhere from small Scottish B&Bs to five-star Marriott resorts in Phuket, and this place really knows how to look after guests.

The pool area has a real jungle feel, and the hotel has both a great restaurant and a very cool cafe. There are also some great shops nearby. I'd stay here again.
