Fan's Hotel Palo

I was in Palo, Leyte for a training and stayed here. The rooms were super clean, and the staff serving us were polite and accommodating. The food was nice, too. On my second day I took an early morning walk toward the McArthur park. The 30 minute walk was awesome. Upstairs there's an al fresco hangout area with a view of the wide ocean on one side, and the highway and residential area on the other.

The rooms are quiet and easy to sleep in, thanks to the split unit air conditioners, and the showers are spotless with hot water that works perfectly. The hotel is clean, new in 2025, and has beautiful lighting. It's next to a shopping mall, and you can check in early for a half days rate. Still, the cheapest rooms are 2700 pesos, with no windows or refrigerators. Wi-Fi was slow and unreliable, mobile data didn't work inside, and the Smart TV couldn't connect to Wi-Fi, so it was useless. Tacloban's center is far away. I'd give it three and a half stars. At a lower price, I'd give four.

We booked because a typhoon was approaching, and before reserving we specifically checked whether the generator worked in a power outage. Staff assured us it did. When the electricity went out in the storm, though, they never turned it on. We spent the night without power, and our baby was suffering in the heat. It was stressful and uncomfortable, especially after being told backup power was available. The room was overpriced for what it offered, with not even a refrigerator. If we'd known we'd be without electricity during the typhoon, and if other hotels hadn't been fully booked, we definitely wouldn't have chosen this place. Management needs to improve and make sure guests get the service and comfort they pay for, particularly in an emergency.

The room was spacious, the bed was good, and the hotel is modern. The aircon was quiet, the shower strong, the Wifi good, and there was an elevator. But in room 8515 there was a BAD smell in the bathroom that spread into the room as soon as the bathroom door was open.
