The room was clean, with fresh linens, a clean toilet, and a good hot shower. But there was no refrigerator, no café downstairs, and all the restaurants were closed when I checked in at the last minute on New Year’s Eve. The cable TV had so few channels that it didn’t do much for me, and the reception felt lukewarm. I had trouble with the sockets and called Reception from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. When I finally went down, the lobby lights were off and no receptionist was there. I was told they turn the lights off after midnight, not sure why. If you only need somewhere to sleep, Maya is fine. For a proper break, I’d choose an Airbnb with cutlery, glasses, plates, decent bedding, and more to watch. I slept a little, wasn’t able to enjoy myself, went hungry, and spent $40 for one night. What a way to spend New Year’s Eve.

Maya is an OK no-frills inn, but a couple of things have really bothered me during my stays over the past few months. Once, our room smelled of cigarettes. When we asked to move, we were told the only option was a more expensive room. If a room smells like smoke, guests who ask to switch should be moved to another room at the same price, and rooms shouldn’t be left smelling that way in the first place. I also ordered just a soda and a glass of juice through room service, and had to pay right then instead of having it added to my bill for checkout. These may sound like small issues, but I had higher expectations when I first heard about Maya, and they weren’t met. Expect that a room might smell of cigarettes, with no apology. That’s why I gave it a failing rating.

The staff have been courteous and helpful, and the price is competitive with similar hotels. Still, I find it a bit expensive for the condition of the rooms. This used to be a very nice budget hotel, but it needs refurbishing now. On my last visit, the sink stand fell apart and there was a problem with the faucet. Wi-Fi is only available in the lobby, not in the rooms.

The surroundings are quiet, the rooms are clean, and the staff are courteous. For an inn, it’s very good and laid out like a hotel, though there are very few amenities. To earn five stars, they should offer food or have a convenience store nearby.

A great budget hotel. You can check in at any time of day at The Maya Residence, and your stay lasts a full 24 hours. No need to rush to check out, which is nice.
