Khaplu Palace is a fortified residential palace rather than a military-style fort like Skardu Fort, blending defensive features with elegance. This 19th-century royal residence was home to the Yabgo dynasty, rulers of the Khaplu region. Its beautiful, peaceful setting has earned it the name “Taj Mahal of the Karakoram.”

We made good memories during our two days at the palace. It has an ancient feel, and the atmosphere was quiet and peaceful. The staff were friendly and welcoming. At night, though, I heard what sounded like someone jumping above my room, and the noise went on all night. Maybe there were children staying at the hotel. Apart from that, it was beautiful.

The place has loads of charm and sits in a wonderful part of the world. The Royal Palace Reception area has been converted very sympathetically, as you’d expect from the hotel group. The bedrooms are great, and the shower rooms are modern. Dinner was good, though breakfast was a bit indifferent.

Some rooms are quite small, though anyone lucky enough to get one facing the lawn should be very pleased. We enjoyed staying in this historic, century-old building. The cozy garden in front of the restaurants is a lovely shaded spot for families and kids to spend an evening. As always, the staff at Serena were courteous and helpful.

The palace is in a really nice location with lovely scenery, and the staff were friendly and cooperative. We had a couple of problems in the washroom: the sink broke twice, and the toilet seat seemed to leak, leaving our room quite smelly. The staff fixed it right away.
