The owner was hard to reach, and the front door keys didn’t match. Suspicious people seemed to come and go, which added to the unsettling feel. Inside, the place was filthy and in disarray. The kitchen was so dirty that turning on the light made the mess hard to miss, and the switch felt sticky. The floors were grimy, the kitchen hadn’t been wiped down, and walking barefoot was out of the question. There was trash everywhere, and the yard looked like a battlefield when we arrived. The beds were bloody, the sheets damp and musty, and the refrigerator held moldy vegetables. Soup stains seemed baked onto the plates. The bathroom was badly neglected, with scum on the tiles and match stubs left behind. The fireplace had beer cans and who knows what else in place of firewood. Opening the closets felt risky, with trash liable to spill out or a door to hit you on the head. The whole visit felt like a place of torture, with the Ryś guesthouse giving off the atmosphere of pathology. If you’re looking for the atmosphere of Auschwitz in Białystok, this is the place. I wouldn’t tell anyone to avoid it.
