Atena

I attended a group dinner at this city-centre hotel. The venue was good, and the staff welcomed everyone and served the courses promptly, with a professional and courteous manner. There are only a few free spaces in the backyard, but paid public parking nearby is suitable. I’d recommend the place.

I’ve been staying here since 2015, for nearly 200 nights in total, and I’ve tried most of the other local hotels too. The rooms have been clean every time, and the staff are consistently kind and helpful. Food, drinks, and rooms are fairly priced and feel like honest value. The restaurant is among the city’s best, and the chef is wonderful. If you like steak, try one of the black angus specials. Ask for it rare and you’ll get a properly rare steak, the kind a Texan would approve of. You can walk to the city centre in just under 15 minutes, and the train station takes a few minutes longer. There are plenty of restaurants, pizza places, and shops nearby. Slupsk is also a great town for walking or running. This feels like one of the safest parts of an already safe town. The Police Academy is right across the street, so you’ll see lots of cadets and instructors around. Those four big guys and two ponytailed women walking back after pizza night are probably cadets heading to the academy. Over the years, teammates have asked me where to stay. I show them the nearby options, go through the pros and cons, and tell them this is where I stay. Most of those visiting Poland and Slupsk for the first time choose the same safe option. I’m glad that most of them keep coming back.

I had a great stay at Hotel Atena. The food was very good, the service was terrific, and the staff treated me really well. Katerina does a lovely job making guests feel welcome.

During the last 18 months, I’ve spent four months living at Hotel Atena. It’s pretty much become my home away from home. The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable, and I’ve had at least 75% of the roughly 120 dinners I’ve eaten in Slupsk at the Atena restaurant. That says a lot, and I don’t see that changing. The staff are what really make the place. They all know me by name, and I know theirs. They remember that I don’t want onions on my salad, order Coke Zero ahead of my arrival because it’s my favorite, and make sure there’s a fan in my room since I can’t sleep without one. I don’t speak Polish, but they’ve helped me order pizza, read medicine dosage instructions, and find a local barber. They do everything they can to make a long stretch away from home feel comfortable. Would I recommend the Atena? Absolutely.
