There’s a particularly nice collection of miniatures showing the Uprising, alongside other interesting exhibits. The museum itself is very nice, and the English labels are thorough enough that you don’t need an audio guide.

The section about life in Soviet gulag camps was very interesting, and it’s part of the second floor’s main collection. That collection looks fascinating, but there’s no audio guide, and I don’t go to museums to read paragraphs off a monitor. An audio guide is available only for the collection on the entrance level, which mostly covers Lwiw and Vilnius.

It takes about an hour to see the main exhibition on the second floor, which isn’t very large. It covers Poland’s path to independence after World War I and introduces important leaders from the period, showing how the country was restored on the map of Europe after more than a century of partition. The first floor has smaller displays about General Tadeusz Kościuszko, with paintings, and Warsaw’s post-World War II reconstruction, with photos. Some of these exhibits are only in Polish.

The exhibits cover a fascinating and important story about the First World War and the complicated position Poland was in during the conflict. But I don’t think the museum tells it particularly well. If you already know 19th and early 20th century Polish history, it may add some depth and color. If you don’t, you might want to save the 20 złoty. The museum felt chaotic, without a clear route or even a map. Some exhibits are in English, but most aren’t, despite what some reviews say. The ladies working there were uncommunicative. In Warsaw, I’d encountered openly friendly and welcoming Polish people of all ages, so it was bemusing to meet rather less friendly museum staff twice in 30 minutes at two different places. I was also refused a reduced ticket. It wasn’t a big deal, but seemed odd, since I’m sure EU nationality isn’t an extra requirement for one.

The museum mainly tells the story of Poland’s rebirth in 1918, after the country had spent 123 years divided between Russia, Austria, and Germany. It’s a magnificent event.
