Douglas Highway Hotel

The staff were very friendly, and although the office was closed, I called and the person in charge came in under five minutes to let me into the room. It’s still under construction, but the room was clean and the air conditioning worked really well. There’s plenty of parking, a large pool open until 7:30pm, and a restaurant and bar on site. A good place for a night, especially with the beaches nearby.

The owner and employees were humble, kind, and helpful, and their professionalism and care meant a lot to us. The place itself is spectacular. We enjoyed the delicious mojitos, other drinks and beers, and the range of tasty food. It’s also close to several places of interest. I’d recommend visiting, 120%.

We drove past to check what we’d been told, and the hotel was dark, with the parking lot locked and no other cars there. The nearby buildings were boarded up and falling apart, and the place looked abandoned. Being beside the main highway in a foreign town, with no staff, security, amenities, or other guests, didn’t feel safe. The whole situation felt shady. We’d booked and been charged even though the hotel wasn’t open. On the day of our reservation, someone called to say it was closed, then offered to meet us and open a room, while warning us there’d be no staff, security, or amenities and nobody else staying there. It felt like a scam setting us up for something worse. Expedia is refusing to refund us, saying the free modification date had passed. We had to spend our only night in Cabo Rojo looking for another hotel. Luckily we found one, but now we’ve paid for two. Terrible business owners. Don’t risk arriving at a closed hotel and still being charged.

The owner, receptionists, bartender, and chef all made this a grand experience. They were so welcoming and caring, and I really enjoyed the pool too. I’ll definitely come back, and I’d highly recommend the place. A definite five-star stay.
