Oca Douro Valley Hotel & Spa

The location may be among the best in Portugal, and the hotel has so much potential that it could easily rank among Iberia’s top five. It’s frustrating to see that go to waste. The place feels poorly maintained, runs with very limited services, and can seem abandoned. Charging those prices for what’s provided feels obscene.

We had booked two nights with an “Odisseias” voucher we received as a wedding gift, but left after one sleepless night. The rooms felt dated, smelled dusty, and had a strong sewage odor coming from the bathroom. There was also a steady noise from the old ventilation system at night. The indoor pool was extremely cold, and the chemical smell made me cough so much that I had to get out. Breakfast had very few options, and no one explained simple things like how the buffet worked. The staff weren’t welcoming, though it’s a shame to blame them for a place that seems to be falling apart and stuck in time. The views are breathtaking, and it must have been beautiful once, but don’t be taken in by the infinity pool: it isn’t there, and I’m sure it’ll take a while to come back. I’m still shocked this place calls itself four-star. I’m sure a surprise inspection would change that right away.

For what we paid, I expected a little more. The food was average at best, spa treatments were also around average to below average, and customer service was OK. The hotel makes a nice backdrop for photos, but quite a few things inside need updating. The rooms are still great, though the hotel itself feels old. The spa could use a remodel, but it’s still adequate.

It’s so quiet and peaceful here, even when the hotel is full, which makes it a lovely escape. The indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and tanning decks are clean, well cared for, and have beautiful views. I’d definitely say the massage is worth the money. Inside, everything is tidy and clean, though some paintwork could use attention. The restaurant staff are friendly and accommodating, but service can slow down when it’s busy. That doesn’t bother me when I’m here to relax and enjoy those incomparable views.
