We didn't stay the night, but on Sunday afternoon we got to stop by Rosa's small, cozy shop just across the street. She has plenty of local goods, including antiques and handmade items. Rosa is also into Roman coins and numismatics, and sells some coins and banknotes. I bought a few at a very good price. She was warm and welcoming.

We booked Casa da Cidadela, but since there were only three of us, we ended up in Casa do Corro. It was uncomfortable, and we didn't feel like staying there, even just to sleep. The sofa bed was very uncomfortable, the window latches were broken, and the drawers had holes, among other problems. There was barely any reception, probably because there was so much to do at Cidadela. Be careful to check where you'll actually be staying when you book. For us, it felt like a remarkable case of being misled. Maybe it's fine for two people and can seem cute, but otherwise I'd cross it off completely. It wasn't worth the money or the disappointment.

We loved it. The place is magnificent, and the houses are so welcoming. The host, D Rosa, is an incredible person with wonderful hospitality. Her mother, D. Maria, was so kind and helpful too. Good people and unforgettable places. We'd absolutely visit again.

I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt, since I didn't use the place and it wouldn't be fair to rate what I don't know. Still, I only give it two stars. It's a partner of the Grande Rota das aldeias históricas and the only place to stay within 20 km. Coming from the south, as I was, getting to Castelo Mendo meant tackling huge climbs and descents, which was exhausting. When I contacted the owner about staying one night, she said she only takes bookings for two nights. I carried on to Almeida, already worn out, to find somewhere to sleep.

We really liked the house. It was so cozy, and having a fireplace was a big plus on cold days. The woman who welcomed us was very kind and made sure the house was warm when we arrived.
