Lam Hotel Convento d'Alter

I didn't expect to come across such a lovely boutique hotel in the middle of Portugal. It's a beautiful old property, with tastefully decorated halls and large rooms with comfortable beds. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout, and the service deserves a big compliment.

The hotel is lovely inside, but the service and attention to detail need work. At check-in, the receptionist seemed wary about our double bed and asked a colleague to confirm it. Fortunately, he was more at ease and said it was a double. Has she never seen gay people before? We paid for a room, not to be scrutinized. She needs training. Room 114 was nice. The fridge wasn't working, but reception sorted it after I got in touch. The pool area was pleasant, though it needs more umbrellas, and the bedroom curtain should be replaced. Someone arrived to carry out a health and safety audit while we were there, but there was no representative on site, which concerned me. Breakfast was disappointing: staff seemed to keep disappearing, the water that was supposed to be hot wasn't, and the kettle had no water in it. Overall, it was not a good breakfast.

The breakfast was plentiful and very good, and the staff were helpful. There are two outdoor pools and a bar, though the restaurant wasn't operating when I stayed. The building is a very old 17th-century monastery, spacious, with more than 30 rooms. Well worth a visit.

The location is great, and breakfast comes in good portions with very good products. The staff are friendly and helpful, though service at the bar could be faster. It's a nice hotel, but it needs refurbishment to feel more modern.
