Varandas De Alter Hotel Spa

Tasty food, and plenty of room.

The service was very poor.

The owners and staff gave us a really warm welcome, and the place has good facilities. We were greeted right away by "DUQUE"! It’s a lovely place to stay. Shame we didn’t have time to enjoy the beautiful pool, but maybe next time.

Breakfast was modest but adequate, with more than enough products from well-known brands like compal, ucal, and primor. We did get the impression the bread and croissants were a day or two old. The croissants were so dry they were hard to swallow. The check-in went smoothly, and the hotel’s Rafeiro Alentejano guard dog may seem intimidating when he greets you, but he’s actually very peaceful. Our room, right by the entrance, had an almost unbearable sewage smell. My wife even vomited. I opened the window and turned on the AC. Whether we got used to it or the smell went away, we managed to tolerate the night. Since it was late, we didn’t want to deal with changing rooms. The fridge is inside the wardrobe and seems to drip, because the wood has rotted. It also sits at an angle and makes noise at night, so it doesn’t belong in the room. I’d requested a cot, but the hotel didn’t have one on site. I’d brought one in the car from the last hotel where we stayed, and already knew that. The TV is tiny, maybe 18.5 inches, and there’s only one power outlet beside the bed, between the two beds. Bring an extension cord. The hotel needs urgent work to sort out these problems. It has everything it needs to be a welcoming place to stay.
