I made a booking through Booking, and it was confirmed. Five days later, the accommodation messaged to say they couldn’t honor those dates because of an “unforeseen issue,” and suggested other dates instead. The reservation was for very specific dates, so I couldn’t accept the change or jeopardize an offer I’d already made to someone else. This caused trouble for me and another person. It looked like poor organization, possibly overbooking because they only considered direct reservations and weren’t checking bookings made through platforms like Booking. I’d advise anyone booking here to check carefully and make sure the reservation is truly confirmed.

The young guide recites her presentation from memory, and Eça deserved much more. The shop sells wine, various souvenirs, and books, but no water for a dry throat in the heat. At Tormes, which you only go to once, the beauty of the place is unfortunately not the whole story. Arriving at the house of Tormes, the property of the Condes de Resende and Eça’s in-laws, I’d say the narrow path up from the station has changed little since the time when he came that way.

A lovely place for a great lunch with friends or family, with spectacular views.

Fundação Eça de Queiroz is well worth the trip!
