The restaurant was a great surprise. I saw pizzas coming out that looked delicious, but I ordered grilled pumpkin with honey, goat cheese, and nuts for Halloween, then Alentejan black pig’s meat. It tasted like heaven. They also have good fish, as you’d expect at many restaurants in Portugal. Hospedaria Dona Maria is great value, and the people working there are very friendly. I only stayed one night. Room 111 was spacious, quiet, and very clean, with a new look and a really comfortable double bed. There’s air conditioning, which I didn’t use, and the bathroom was quite big compared with those in many larger hotels these days. Hot water came through in a second. The internet worked fine. If you’re traveling by motorcycle, there’s a large square in front of the hostel where you can park. I asked the local police offices where to leave it, and it felt relatively safe because they’re right there.

For my first night in Portugal, I needed a comfortable, central place to sleep, and HDM did the job. My room was very small, but I was traveling alone and that was all I needed. The bed was comfortable, the sheets were clean and white, and the staff were helpful. They gladly stored my bike and big suitcase in an empty room near reception. Breakfast cost only 5e. It wasn’t as fancy as a 10e breakfast, but it was perfectly fine and an easy way to start the day. My ratings are based on value and my simple needs. If you’re expecting the Hilton, this place may not be for you.

Fabio, the receptionist, was very kind and helped me out in two different situations. He studies at Beja Institute and is considering the DAAD program. I really liked Hotel Dona Maria. The location is amazing, close to the bus station and right in front of a beautiful square and a supermarket. Dear guests, may you have the love, peace, and joy of Jesus. Thank you very much. Breakfast came with homemade cake and jam, which was a lovely touch. The place was welcoming and clean. Some of the furniture feels a little old-fashioned, but it was still a pleasant stay.

Locals seem to come here often, which is usually a good sign. The pizzas are tasty and cost around €7, so they're good value. Just know the sausage topping is the hot-dog kind. I had the Roma, with plenty of anchovies and capers, and really enjoyed it.
