Afonso III

The hotel looks basic, but my 82 year old mother and I both felt safe around it, even with the derelict buildings and graffiti nearby. It was comfortable and had everything we needed, including a kettle and cups. We brought our own tea and coffee, and appreciated the two complimentary tea bags. The heating and air conditioning were welcome on a cold, rainy day. It's a great, basic 2 star hotel close to the centre, bus and train stations, with some very nice restaurants within a five-minute walk. I'd recommend it.

The staff were easily the best part, super friendly. The hotel is old and dated, but clean, and the rooms have private bathrooms. I didn't sleep a wink, though. The thin windows and walls let in all the noise: garbage trucks and buses ran all night, I could hear people in the next room chatting and flicking switches, and doors kept banging throughout the hotel. If you need a good night's sleep, this hotel isn't fit for purpose. I can't say anything about breakfast since I didn't have it.

We were glad this was only our last night before the flight. The room was on the first floor beside a side street, and it was extremely loud all night. Thin walls meant we could also hear lots of guests going out and coming back in the middle of the night. The friendly staff were the best thing about the hotel, and they do serve breakfast early, at 06:30 AM.

We needed a night before an early flight, and this was perfect. The room was clean and quiet, and the staff were friendly and helpful. It's basic but cheap and cheerful, close to the train station and about a 10-minute walk from the marina and town. Breakfast looked good too.
