Barcelo Funchal Oldtown

Barceló Old Town was a great base for our week in January, with restaurants all around and our longest walk to dinner only about ten minutes. The staff were lovely and shared restaurant recommendations when we checked in. Breakfast was generous, with plenty of hot and cold choices, an omelette and egg station, and even sparkling wine if you fancied a glass. Paula, the assistant manager, was especially kind. She welcomed us at breakfast and arranged a late checkout, which helped a lot since our pickup wasn’t until 5.00 pm. Much appreciated by us, and the whole team gave great service. The rooftop loungers and bar were lovely, though the pool is more of a plunge pool than somewhere to swim. The gym is tiny and has no outside windows, so it didn’t feel very inviting. Those were the only small drawbacks for us. We had a great stay and will definitely be back.

The staff made the stay stand out, welcoming us warmly and taking care of everything. Breakfast had fresh, high-quality food and a great selection, and the rooftop was a lovely place to relax with stunning views. Our room was elegant, roomy, spotlessly clean, and had comfortable beds and quality amenities. We loved being in the heart of Funchal’s Old Town. Restaurants, cafés, historic sights, and the waterfront are all within walking distance. A luxurious and relaxing stay, highly recommended.

I only had one night here, but enjoyed every minute and would come back for a longer stay. The front desk staff were charming and helpful. It’s an easy walk to good restaurants, sights, and the cruise terminal.

Loved the hotel’s design and location. Nights were quiet, and it was child friendly. A couple of downsides: the gym is tiny, and the breakfast selection felt limited for a five-star hotel.
