Hotel Caju

The cafe and breakfast staff were so warm and genuinely friendly. The à la carte breakfast and daytime food were excellent. My only suggestion is to keep the cafe and bar open later for evening drinks, though with so many bars right outside, it wasn’t much of a problem. This small hotel has beautiful modern rooms, stunning decor, and amazingly friendly staff. It’s on a pedestrian street with bars, shops, and restaurants close by, making it easy to walk around central Funchal. Taxis can drop you right by the hotel, and the airport bus stops five minutes away. I’d definitely recommend it and plan to return.

Handy for Funchal town, with plenty of good restaurants just a few metres away. The staff were pleasant and helpful, and breakfast was nice.

Caju gets a lot right at first glance: it’s right in the heart of Funchal, the design is distinctive, the rooms look great, the beds are comfortable, and they arranged our airport transfer quickly. But the noise carries straight through the walls from nearby rooms, so privacy and sleep were hard to come by. The bathroom was the biggest problem. The shower seal let water spill into the bedroom, something other guests had apparently reported before us. When we raised it, we got a vague claim that it had been fixed, with no apology, even though the shower joints still looked wrong. That response left us feeling brushed off. Breakfast tasted good and had been thoughtfully put together, but the service felt rushed and cold. The dining room was noisy too, with loud music and staff calling across it. For a hotel presenting itself as four star, that level of neglect is unacceptable. The place photographs beautifully, and the location and beds are great, but the stay left us feeling taken for fools.

The rooms are roomy and comfortable, and the staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. The hotel is in a fantastic spot in Funchal’s old town. I’d recommend staying here.
