Pestana Quinta Perestrello

We spent 14 nights at Pestana Quinta Perestrello, and it may be the best hotel we’ve stayed at on our travels. The small size made the experience feel personal. Staff all over the hotel were friendly and helpful, always greeting us with a smile. We chose bed and breakfast, which suited us well. The main breakfast was cooked to order, and the breakfast team were fantastic, both in their service and friendliness. There’s a great choice of restaurants right on the doorstep, all worth considering. We regularly went into Funchal and joined both day trips and guided walking tours, with lots of options to choose from. It’s been a holiday to remember. Thank you.

The Quinta Perestrello doesn’t have its own restaurant, so breakfast is at the neighbouring Miramar, reached in about five minutes via a connecting walkway and internal corridors. Breakfast was very good, with a broad cold buffet and hot dishes ordered from a menu. The quality and presentation were both good. We also had access to Miramar’s larger outdoor pool and indoor pool. I used the indoor one and found it clean and pleasantly decorated. The gym, sauna, jacuzzi and steam room are at the third adjoining hotel, The Village Resort. Those facilities weren’t very good: the gym equipment was basic and tired, the sauna was broken, and the steam room and jacuzzi weren’t very hot. The building looked like it needed renovation. We enjoyed the smaller boutique feel of the Quinta while still having access to a larger hotel’s facilities. Some guests may not like the walk to breakfast or the lack of a bar, though a five-minute walk didn’t bother us. There’s a tastefully decorated lounge/library and another room with a pool table, but no bar at the Quinta itself, which was fine for us. Staff at all three hotels were lovely, friendly and helpful. We stayed for a week in early December in a pool-view room on the pool level. The Quinta Perestrello was refurbished in late 2024, and our room was excellent, very clean, with modern facilities and tasteful classic villa decor. The air conditioning was quiet and the room seemed well soundproofed. It wasn’t warm enough to swim, but the pool was nice and the gardens were well kept. There was road noise outside, as a fairly busy road runs below the grounds, but with the doors closed we didn’t hear it inside.

Before we arrived, we were in touch with Guest Service Manager Adelino Pereira. He was extremely helpful and, since we were celebrating an anniversary, kindly arranged some nice touches in the room. Breakfast was included at the adjoining Miramar hotel, also owned by Pestana. There was a generous buffet as well as hot options, the food was tasty, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Our room was delightful, with a balcony looking out over the ocean and the hills around Funchal. It was very clean, and the bathroom was spacious, with a walk-in shower. The boutique hotel is a pleasant walk from Funchal town centre. Recommended.

The occasional road noise was the only drawback, and it didn’t bother us. Perestrello is a beautifully restored mansion house in a great spot, with excellent staff. We enjoyed lovely breakfasts at the adjoining Miramar, and the Village Hotel has great facilities and a bar. It suited us perfectly.
