We didn’t rent a car, but getting into Funchal centre was easy with the Bolt App. A Bolt taxi cost only about 4 euros, and the ride took around 10 minutes. The setting is peaceful while still being close to town. The Quinta is spacious and beautifully decorated, with everything you need for a stay. Its garden has lovely views over Funchal and a large swimming pool.

Joy and her husband were such attentive hosts, and Joy even made us a lovely meal on our first night. We were a family of six with two young children, and the place had everything we needed. The heated pool was a great addition. The location is perfect, right at the bottom of the toboggan run into the centre of Funchal. It felt like paradise, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Joy, the owner, is fantastic and knows a lot, so ask her if you need information or fancy a home-cooked meal on your first night. There’s a bakery about a five-minute walk down the road, then a small supermarket a couple of minutes farther on. The house is close to a taxi rank, but the number 19 bus gets you into town in about 15 minutes and costs much less, especially with a multi-journey Giro card. The views over Funchal and the harbour are fantastic, and it’s a great place to stay.
